I've noticed lately that after putting body weight on lower legs/calves (like when at the bottom of a squat) for longer than a few seconds (like when holding a stretch with body weight over the folded leg) I get like an ache/cramp/pain deep in the tissue. Anyone else get this, or know how to strengthen these muscles? Any advice would be helpful

Hi Novice,

are they like shin splints? and are you over weight and have you had any previous injuries before?

Thanks for the reply UBT,
Don't think weight is the problem, could be shin splints. I've heard of them, and remember instructors saying don't do skipping if you have them. It doesn't hurt when i skip, only when body weight is pressing directly down on them and leg is bent. Are there really deep muscles along the front of the shin?

Can't tell from what you have written is the pain anterior or posterior?

Shin splints are do with tib anterior (runs down the front of the shin - like were you leg kick someone).

More info dude??

Anterior, but low down like just above ankles. Right alongside the inside edge of the tibia I think

This sounds kinda crazy, but to help it simply have your heels on the ground when standing or sitting and start to tap your toes ....

It works as I had bad shin splints and this actually helped me heaps!

Ive heard of a similar sensation, friend at work a few years ago had similar to what you've described, athought they weren't active like you. But, it turns out it was to do with their arches which had collapsed and they ended up needing orthodics ( i think thats how its spelt ) might be worht seing a podiatrist.

Gave the legs a coupla weeks off training, seem better now. Have been working squats (bodyweight), with jump at the top for a month or so, and the pain seems to have gone. What do you guys do for lower leg/knee strength?
Thanks for the previous advice.

Hey UBT I dont quite understand how this exercise is done, do you tap the toes with the fingers? As in, is this a stretching exercise? Question

A good way to strengthen the muscle is to sit down and put a weight plate on your feet and lift your feet up. Works the muscle great! also I had pronation of the feet, rolls inwards, which can cause shin splints, then knee pain, tightened hip flexors, lower back pain. See a podiatrist before these symptoms become too bad

all good advice Exclamation

I found that when I started to do running and jogging on the sand, my calves really took a beating and really hurt after each session.

I also find that after I have been out boarding for a couple of hours, the walk back up to the showers or car kills my calves as well. This could be due to the cold water or the fact that cause i am a novice at boarding, I spend all my time just kicking my legs trying to get onto a wave Razz

Resistance training is great for all body parts and the strength gains are amazing
