Ya hear ppl say ya need mat fitness more then fitness and yaget that by time on the mat,but is there really a difference?? As far as fitness goes I probably spend more time on the mat than i do trying to get generally fit but I dont seem to have any increased mat fitness. And whatever mat fitness I have doesn't help me in everyday life, like running for the bus if im late, so whats the key, whats the best to have - mat fitness or general fitness or both. Confused

seen fit peope come on to the mat, and not last

why
diferent sort of activity

same a running of the bus, not to much of that happens on mat so no help

general fitness will definitily help mat fitness
help in the recovery stamina, endurance

bjj is a lot of isometric hold that is holding a weght in a single spot for an increased time
weight is about lifting it up or down not holding

general fitness is always a Big bonus, but you have to be fit for yor individual sport as well.

You wouldnt train tennis fitness to surf ...

However some basic fitness is required...boxing is one of the workouts that is great for endurance and can help as a general fitness level all over...football players use this as well as the occasional surf as well.

I use surfing as a great way to get fit, especially in a bigger surf...paddling out alone can really take it out of you, and then getting worked is pretty hard on the body as well.

Mat fitness is something that you do develop. It basically means that you can wrestle for 10 minutes instead of 2 ....it may not make you a better fighter, but by being able to stay on the mat longer, able to keep moving longer and to be able to think more clearly, you will get better

Being younger Ive got general fitness naturally ( for now, my dad says if I dont work at it I will loose it ) and what you call mat fitness weill mines not too bad, but I notice i lack musclefitness if theres such a thing, they seem to tire easy especially when against bigger guys.

I lost my fitness a long while ago being one of the older people on the mat (yep about 37) I cant keep up with these fast past younger grapplers...

The reason why your arms or forarms burn out is that your trying to use to much strength and fighting strength with strength generally means that the stronger person will win.

There has been a few threads on 'conditioning' and 'fitness' and these are well worth looking into and starting.

I dont do any weight training at all but use resistance bands instead and that has helped me heaps....

Fitness bands I thought they were for the ladies in aerobics classes. Will they help my muscles get fitter. I try not to go strenght for strength with the bigger guys but they even tire holding guard or working achoke. I will look at a fitness band if you say they work, just have to find somewhere to tie it to that wont ping off and hit me. Laughing

Hey Animal, no offence its just what I thought, hadn't considered using them but will now, trying to talk my sister into "holding" it for me Twisted Evil
I assume there are excercises to work legs, arms, gut, bum, and would be keen to hear of some so I can try them. Thanks

there are some 300-400 exercises that can be done with the bands

include therapy, rehap, strength and conditionings, agility and power
and other such exercises

what an awesome piece of equipment

one band many exercises and and portable too ( gym in a bag)

I dont touch weights unless its about 4-5 weeks out of a comp and then do some strength training....

I do use the resistance bands on a regular basis and found that it has made my core strength go through the roof, plus basic muscle strength is growing with each session...

I wouldnt get your sister to hold it, but use a tree outside or a clothes line etc etc etc.....
