Hi guys
Hopefully you can provide me with some advice regarding clubs. I would like to start training in BJJ. My interests are no gi, gi and the combat/self defense aspect of it, competition doesn't really interest me at this stage.
I live NOR although I will travel if needed.
It will be much appreciated if you could recommend the best clubs in Perth

Thanks John

Hi John,

i thought Cobra offer BJJ and self defence.
However if not there are lots of good clubs around Perth. have you checked the club listing on this forum?

for BJJ Gi & No Gi North of the river you could check out

- Academy of Mixed Martial Arts in Mirrabooka, they've just got a cage in too
- Submission Factory in Wangara

I've trained at both and would recomend them.

For self defence you could try contacting this address

stan@selfdefencetactics.com.au

for more info check out this topic on this forum

good luck

Thanks for the reply. Cobra don't really start BJJ until the third year or so which is very dissapointing. Besides the two you mentioned I was looking at legion 13 and Mach 1 fight club. It's quite time consuming trying to trial every club that looks good

i'm not sure if there's anyone that teaches BJJ as purely self defence / combative i'd say it's all pretty much aimed at MMA /cage fighting now adays. If you're prepared to travel have you looked into Sozokan Academy in Maddington. I've heard good things about them. in additon to BJJ they also do kempo jiu jitsu which may be more what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure the head coach's name is Paul.

i thought Cobra did BJJ beginner classes but didnt' know you had to be there for 3 yrs. If you're prepared to travel south you could check out HULK MMA in Bibra Lake.

They don't have a BJJ specific class. It is introduced in their mma classes 2-3 years in.
It's a shame because it's a really good club.
I have booked a two week trial starting tonight at Legion 13 in cannington. So I will be doing BJJ and MMA if I decide I like the club

Cannington?? and you live North?

Best purely BJJ in Perth, would have to be Nono Unio - Goioerę Jiu Jitsu - I think it's in Mount Lawley.

Self Defense/MMA, would have to go Mach 1 - In Joondalup or Osborne Park

And BTW, Cobra are no good.
Just commercialized crap.
I would bet on anyone from one of the gyms I mentioned with 1 years experience against anyone from Cobra with 4 years+ experience. But if it's enjoyable and what keeps you active then why not.

It's a bit of a drive for me, but I quite like Legion 13 so far. I'll be trying their MMA class on Monday so that will be a good indicator. Why do you think cobra is a poor quality of training?

How long does it take to get a black belt in kicking people in the balls and poking them in the eyes?

JohninPerth, i think Monkey means in Krav marga and cqc
Monkey, dont knock it, the moves may not be allowed in competiton but is good grass roots street self defence moves

Thats a shame each to their own style Cobra is fine and all schools are !! if you up in the North you got plenty to choose from , Legion 13 is a great club but like Animal suggests drop into AMMA its close by?
